Chapter 6
Guardian Angels
It was bound to happen, sooner or later, and it never comes at a good time. I was laid up in bed, dizzy, sore and tired. I had the flu, and it was kicking my ass. I don’t care how tough you think you are; when you get sick, all bets ar e off.
I had been bedridden for two days and was out of food. I was craving chicken noodle soup, so I called my brother, Larry. He told me he would stop by the store and pick up a couple cans for me and bring them over later tonight. It was about four o’clock, so I switched on the TV and waited. I must have dozed off because the next thing I knew, it was after seven and my brother still hadn’t show ed up.
It was cold and gloomy outside, and it looked like it had just rained. I could hear the cars swishing by my house on the damp pave ment.
I sat up and grabbed the glass of tepid water I’d placed on my nightstand the night before and chugged it down. My stomach gurgled for soup, so I made another call. This time there was no a nswer.
I knew the store was right around the corner from my place, but it was still a little too far to walk in my condition, especially in this weather. I waited another half hour for my brother as my patience slowly waned. He was still a no-show. Now, I was pissed. I wanted that soup, and I wanted it now. I decided to take the bike and get it over with.
I could have called one of my club bros, but I didn’t want any of them to ride out in this weather for me and see me in this pitiful, weakened state. Besides, I could hear them now saying shit like, “Oh you poor thing. Are you sick?” or “Do you need a hug to make it feel better?” It was just best they didn’t see me like this. After all, I had a reputation to u phold.
I pulled my bike out and scoped out the road condition. I noticed the roads were almost dry in the travel areas from the steady tra ffic.
I looked up and frowned at the black cloud looming overhead, threatening to burst at any minute. It’d be an easy trip there and back, if I hurried. I had on a thick, heavy coat to keep me extra warm and made my way down the wet s treet.
The trip there took a matter of minutes, and I even found a spot up by the front door. I shut the motor down and removed my he lmet.
Some kid walked up with his groceries and tried his best to irk me. He looked like he was at most 20, but shitheads like these always think they’re invincible and go around picking fights trying to pro ve it.
“Hey, dude,” he said, his mocking voice thick on the word ‘dude’.
